ENG. “ In his work, Valentin van der Meulen is almost exclusively inspired by media photographs. Originally, erasing appeared in his drawings from images about migrants. (...) He draws the selected portraits with a perfect, traditional and precise technique, without fixing the charcoal on the paper in the studio. Then, he erases portraits represented with large erasers, and creating dense network of structures in the powder of the charcoal. The artist explains his erasing technique by the fact that most of the time we have only a short impression of images. In a way, Valentin van der Meulen destroys his drawings, but develops something new and mysterious. Sometimes, the artist performs his physically strong erasures in public, during performances, offering particular dynamic to drawing. (...)As with most other portraits, the blur extends inside and beyond the edge of the drawing, further emphasizing their creative power. ”

    FRA. “ Dans son travail, Valentin van der Meulen s'inspire presque exclusivement de photographies des médias. À l'origine, l’effacement est apparu dans ses dessins provenant d’images sur les migrants. (...) Il dessine les portraits sélectionnés en utilisant une technique parfaite, ancienne et précise, sans fixer le fusain sur le papier fixé au mur du l’atelier. Ensuite, il efface le visage de la personne représentée avec de larges gommes, et insère ainsi un réseau dense de structures dans la couche poudreuse du fusain. L'artiste explique sa technique d'effacement par le fait que l'on a souvent qu'une impression fugace des images. Ce faisant, Valentin van der Meulen détruit ses dessins, pour ainsi dire, mais en développe quelque chose de nouveau et de plus mystérieux. De temps en temps, l'artiste réalise ses effacements physiquement exigeants en public, lors de performances, offrant aux œuvres une dynamique particulière. (...) Comme avec la plupart des autres portraits, le flou s'étend à l’intérieur et au-delà du bord du dessin, soulignant encore un peu plus leur pouvoir créatif. ”
